A Priori is a custom fragrance house in San Rafael, California. A short fitting composes a formula for exactly one person; a purpose-built machine compounds it, keeps it on file in grams, and remakes it exactly, for as long as you want to smell like you.
Why “A Priori”
A priori is the philosopher’s term for knowledge held before experience. That is the entire mechanism of this house: the fitting works out your formula before you have ever smelled it.
Off-the-rack perfume is knowledge after the fact. You smell a hundred strangers’ scents and hope one fits. Here the order is reversed. The name is the method.

A short quiz about how you actually live, not which notes you can name. It composes a formula from the house palette, and the formula gets filed under your name.
One-of-one bottles
The $22 fitting trial is a custom 5ml of your own formula, credited in full toward the $92 30ml. Every bottle is compounded to order. Batch size: one.
A scent from a photo
The photo fitting reads a photo you love, maps what it finds to real materials in the palette, and composes from there. That night, in 30 ml.
Events, weddings & hotels

Not a note pyramid, the actual recipe by weight. It gets remade exactly, this year or in ten, and nobody can discontinue it.
Compounded once, for you
A formula here exists in a quantity of one. The machine weighs every component of every bottle to order; there is no vat, and there is no shelf.
The re-cut
Every formula includes one free note-level re-cut. If the fit is off, the recipe is adjusted from the grams on file and a fresh 5ml goes out. A fitting isn’t finished until it fits.

A Priori is built and run by Ryan McGaw, an engineer in San Rafael who couldn’t find a scent that felt like his and went unreasonably far about it: he built a machine that makes exactly one bottle at a time. Bottle #1 was his own. The machine, the palette, the fitting, and the labels are all made in-house.

Is the perfume made by AI?
The formulation engine is an expert system: deterministic rules written by a person, not a model improvising. AI is used where it genuinely helps, like reading a photo in the photo fitting and painting each formula's label art. The machine that fills your bottle is very real metal.
Is it all-natural?
No, and that's deliberate. The palette runs naturals alongside modern aroma molecules, because some of perfumery's best notes, like clean musks and transparent woods, have no natural version. We name what we use instead of hiding it.
What if my scent isn't quite right?
Every formula includes one free note-level re-cut. Tell us what's off, we adjust the recipe from the grams on file and send a fresh 5ml. A fitting isn't finished until it fits.
Do you recreate discontinued perfumes?
No. Every formula here is a house original composed for you. The flip side: a formula made here can't be discontinued. It's on file, it's yours, and it's remade exactly, whenever.
How does the trial work?
The $22 fitting trial is a custom 5ml of your own formula, not a sampler of someone else's. Its full price credits toward the $92 30ml bottle.
Where do you ship?
United States only, by surface mail, since perfume is classified as flammable and can't fly without special authorization. Hawaii is included — it travels by ocean. A small number of air-only Alaska ZIP codes can't be reached yet.
